The Benefits of Loving God’s Word
(Reflection on Psalms 119)
“Christian Reflection on Loving God’s Words”
Every Lord's commandment for us is not for God's
benefit, but for our benefit. Likewise, when God asks us or even demands us that we read His words, we may not realize that the
benefits are for ourselves.
What are the benefits of loving God's Word?
Psalm 119:1-3 (TEV)
Happy are those whose lives are faultless, who live
according to the law of the LORD. Happy are those who follow his commands, who obey him with
all their heart. They never do wrong; they walk in the LORD's
ways.
Loving God's Word makes us happy. Do
you want your life to be happy?
Amen?
Loving God's words makes us happy, because God's words make us:
#1 More Wiser (verse 98)
Psalms
119:98
Your commandment is with me all
the time and makes me wiser than my enemies.
How often we regret that we feel we lack wisdom.
“Ouch, it should be ... Ouch wrong earlier, it should
be ... Ouch not wise, so regret this...”
God's Word can make us wiser - even more so than our
enemies. This means certainty of victory over our enemies.
In what especially the words of God teach us to be
wiser:
- our salvation and success is a gift from God,
- relying on one's own strength is ridiculous. Relying
on God is wisdom.
- Makes us stay humble.
Humility keeps us not stopping from learning, innovating, always knowing to
be grateful, and not being arrogant.
Loving God's words makes us happy, because God's words make us:
#2 Make Us Have More Understanding (Verse 99)
Psalms
119:99
I
understand more than all my teachers, because I meditate on your instructions.
Teachers can teach us many things of knowledge. We
need teachers and owe it to teachers. Teachers can find ways to explain to us
better, clearer, easier to understand.
How teachers have blessed us, and we should be
grateful for their hard work.
If teachers can teach us so many things, what more can
God Himself, Master above all teachers can teach us?
Of course it’s not just knowledge, but God can give
understanding.
Teachers can teach us a lot of knowledge, but we get
understanding from God.
Knowledge is what happens outside of us, but
understanding is what happens inside us.
And without God's grace, without God's intelligence,
without God creating and giving us a brain that functions properly, we will
never have understanding.
Illustration: Know vs Understand
There is a big difference between we know it or we
understand it. We can know that a car if it is stepped on the gas
will run, but that is very different from understanding why a car when the gas
is stepped on it will run.
There is a big difference between us knowing that
heaven and hell exist, but do we understand how to get to heaven?
Loving God's words makes us happy, because God's words make us:
#3 Bringing Us To Maturity (verse 100)
Psalms
119:100
I
have greater wisdom than old men, because I obey your commands.
Maturity don't always correspond with someone age. There are many people who are supposed to be
adults, but are not.
Often people say: “All must try! If you don't try it, you don't know!” Is that right?
Try some
food,
it’s okay! How about to try eat cockroaches? Or poison? Or break your own leg?
Anyone in their right mind would say they won't try anything like
that. Right?
How about to trying to sin? Again,
we who are sane should say that we
don't want to.
Only adults can understand to stay away from sin
because the harm is for us.
Only adults understand that we are indeed free people,
but that does not mean that everything must be done, everything must be tried.
Reading and meditating on God's words leads us to
maturity, no matter what age we are now.
